Netflix Announces New Animated Ghostbusters Series
Netflix is officially developing a new animated Ghostbusters series, marking the franchise’s return to the small screen. This news comes two years after the initial announcement, and the project is set to align with the tone of the recent Ghostbusters films. Elliott Kalan, known for his work as a writer, will be taking the helm as a writer and executive producer, alongside Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. Both Reitman and Kenan are veterans of the franchise, having written and directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
While details about the cast and plot are still under wraps, fans can look forward to this being the third animated series in the Ghostbusters universe. The first was The Real Ghostbusters, which aired from the mid-’80s to early ’90s, followed by Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997.
The most recent film in the Ghostbusters franchise, Frozen Empire, featured a star-studded cast including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim. Original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton also made appearances. Despite mixed reviews, Frozen Empire managed to gross $201.9 million at the global box office. The upcoming animated series is expected to build on the legacy of the franchise, bringing a fresh and exciting chapter to fans.
