Cyberpunk Edgerunners redeems Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch
Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Studio Trigger's anime adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, hooks you within the first 10 minutes with a fast-paced, dark-tech future that portrays the consequences of neo-escapism.
During the eight years that CD Projekt Red kept its game's development under wraps, it was difficult not to get swept away by the wave of hype it generated. The online discussions only intensified with the infamous release of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020. Released in an almost unplayable state, the game had so many problems that the game's co-creator, Marcin Iwiski, released a five-minute video apologizing for the game’s terrible quality.
Nonetheless, with the emergence of their new series “Cyberpunk Edgerunners”, the conversation around Cyberpunk has shifted in a better direction. Using Studio Trigger's distinctive exaggerated aesthetic, it adapts the greatest elements of 2077 into a high-energy animation.
The plot revolves around David, our protagonist. Because of a series of unfortunate events, David is forced to live in the slums of Night City. David finds himself clashing with the most powerful people in the Cyberpunk universe, the Arasaka Corporation, right from the start. In a realm dominated by information & technology, the Arasaka Corporation serves as the ideal "Goliath" for David to slay.
Avid anime fans will watch Edgerunners and find a perfect mix of “Gurren Lagann” & “Ghost in the Shell”.
