CD Projekt Red Hints at Future Animation Plans for Cyberpunk Universe
Before Cyberpunk 2077 completed its remarkable redemption arc, an anime spinoff played a crucial role in changing public perception. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, crafted by Studio Trigger, was instrumental in this shift, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards when it debuted in 2022. Given the success of the anime, it's clear that CD Projekt Red has no intention of stepping away from animation anytime soon.
During a recent earnings call, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed a question that fans have been asking for years: will there be a second season of Edgerunners? While Nowakowski reiterated the studio’s previous stance that the show was a one-off, he also hinted at future animation projects, stating that the developer is “definitely planning to do more in terms of animation,” but stopped short of revealing specific details.
CD Projekt Red has previously indicated its ambition to expand both Cyberpunk and The Witcher into transmedia franchises. In 2022, the studio mentioned its openness to collaborating with other Japanese studios to create additional anime set in the Cyberpunk universe. However, with the studio's focus currently on developing The Witcher 4 (codenamed "Polaris") and the early stages of Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed "Orion"), any new animated projects may still be some time away. The success of Edgerunners was closely tied to the revival of Cyberpunk 2077, and it's unlikely the studio would want a significant gap between the next game installment and any new animated content.
Even if another anime series isn’t in the immediate pipeline, the Cyberpunk franchise is set to expand beyond the realm of video games. Last year, CD Projekt Red announced a collaboration with Anonymous Content to develop a live-action TV show based on the Cyberpunk universe. While updates on this project have been scarce, it’s evident that the studio is committed to turning the sci-fi world of Cyberpunk into a major franchise.
