Armando Cabral and USM Modular Furniture Unite for a Culturally Rich Collection
Fashion designer Armando Cabral has teamed up with USM Modular Furniture to create a captivating collection that draws inspiration from his West African roots. The collaboration blends Cabral's cultural heritage with USM’s signature sleek, modern design. The collection includes an array of pieces such as a bookshelf, storage bed, end table, and tray, each thoughtfully crafted to reflect Cabral’s background while maintaining USM’s iconic modular style.
Named “NKYINKYIM,” the collection is inspired by an Adinkra symbol from the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, symbolizing the winding journey of progress and overcoming challenges. This concept is cleverly integrated into the design of the bookshelf, which features a flowing, zigzag shape supported by four main legs, seamlessly showcasing USM’s modular construction.
Another standout piece is the storage bed, presented in a warm orange hue. It features an extended headboard and built-in nightstands, offering both style and functionality. Cabral’s influence is also seen in a semi-upholstered armchair in olive green, adorned with patterned brown cushions. Reflecting on his design approach, Cabral explained that USM’s modular nature symbolizes the way individual elements come together to form a cohesive and functional whole.
The collection is on display at the USM Soho showroom from February 12th to May 1st, accompanied by pieces from Cabral’s A CASA homeware line. The exhibition also includes works from exhibit partners such as Rruka, Fefo Studio, Amalia Home Collection, Nordic Knots, Alkemis Paints, and Savior Beds. This collaboration beautifully celebrates cultural heritage through contemporary design, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
